Families with Children (0-11)

We nurture children’s curiosity, share the values and story of our faith, and seek to foster belonging and compassion among families.

We are a multi-generational church that delights in nurturing young people. While there are offerings for particular age groups, our church’s life is chiefly lived together. Our children are incorporated into, and thrive in, the full family of God at St. Christopher’s. We worship, learn, serve, and socialize together.

As a church we seek to provide a place for children to:

  • PRAY: Nourish a relationship with God by learning about God through story and ritual.
  • PLAY: Grow to enjoy God and one another through engaging activities and space for trusted connection.
  • EMBRACE GOD’S EXPANSIVE LOVE: Honor the sacred in self and one another through reflection and service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does regular formation for children look like?

Children’s Chapel (PK-2nd Grade) During the 10:00am service children can participate in an age-appropriate service that includes opening prayer, names and check-in, Bible story (told with props, drama, short cartoon video, or book), a time of craft or activity, and ends with a time for children to name their prayers for the week. They return to the main sanctuary before communion and at the peace.

Children’s Monthly Formation (3rd to 5th Grade) This age group meets on Sundays once or twice a month from 11:00am to 12:00noon. During this time they build community, engage Scripture, and reflect on faith and self.

Are there any special offerings for children and families?

Families come together for conversation, connection, and play after the main service when there is a coffee hour or a service activity. Several times a year, and in addition to our all-parish social events, families with young children gather as a group to nurture and grow into a supportive community. Occasionally we offer special programs for children and their families: Communion Workshop, Pray & Play, Vacation Bible School, and Exploring Grief. These opportunities will be advertised well in advance in the newsletter and weekly news.

How are children engaged in worship?

While we understand that children might not find the main worship service the most entertaining part of their week, we believe their presence in worship helps to shape their hearts and minds even when they are not aware of it.

To help children engage in worship we provide fidget toys and children’s bulletins on the bookshelves outside the sanctuary.
As they get older, children and youth can serve in worship as lectors, greeters, and acolytes (3rd grade and up). Having a faithful role in worship increases their engagement significantly.

Children’s Chapel for PK to 2nd grade and Nursery Care for ages 3 and under is offered during the 10:00am service.

How are children engaged in service to the community?

Engagement and service to the community increases children’s awareness and embrace of God’s love. We are always seeking ways that children can serve the church and wider community. Currently, children help assemble food packs on our packing Sundays and volunteer in the vegetable garden. With the assistance of their family, they can shop to fill a holiday tote for the Mary Riggs Neighborhood Center or purchase extra food and hygiene supplies and place them in the Blessing Box in the parking lot.
